Introduction: More Than a Visa – A New Chapter in Spain
Retiring in Spain is a dream shared by many non-EU citizens—drawn by the Mediterranean light, the healthcare system, the rhythm of life. But between the paperwork, bureaucracy, and uncertainty, the process can quickly feel overwhelming.
One of the most accessible pathways is the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV). Often called the “retirement visa,” it enables long-term stays in Spain without needing to work. But let’s be clear: the visa is only one part of the journey.
At Livin’Valencia, we accompany retirees far beyond the visa application. From the NIE number to health insurance, from choosing where to live to signing for your new home, we coordinate each step alongside our trusted legal and administrative partners. And we do it with care.
What Is the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV)?
The Spanish NLV is a residence permit for non-EU/EEA nationals who wish to live in Spain without carrying out any professional or business activity. It is particularly suited for retirees with stable, passive income sources such as pensions, annuities, or investments.
The visa initially grants one year of residence, and it can be renewed twice (for two years each), making it a pathway to permanent residency after five years.
Do You Qualify? Understanding the Requirements
You may qualify for the NLV if:
- You are a non-EU/EEA citizen
- You can prove sufficient passive income or savings
- You do not intend to work in Spain
- You have comprehensive private health insurance
- You can provide a clean police record and a medical certificate
These requirements may seem simple, but every Spanish consulate can interpret them slightly differently. Local nuances matter—and understanding them is key to a smooth application.
Financial Requirements for 2025
The Spanish authorities use a benchmark known as the IPREM to calculate income thresholds. In 2025, the annual IPREM remains at €7,200.
- Main applicant: €28,800 per year (400% IPREM)
- Each dependent: €7,200 per year (100% IPREM)
Family Situation | Minimum Required Income |
---|---|
Individual | €28,800 |
Couple | €36,000 |
Couple + 1 child | €43,200 |
Couple + 2 children | €50,400 |
Alternatively, if you don’t have regular income but possess savings, you’ll typically need to demonstrate at least double the required annual amount in your name (e.g., €60,000+ for a single applicant).
What Kind of Income Is Accepted?
The Spanish authorities require income to be passive, consistent, and verifiable. Accepted sources include:
- State or private pensions
- US Social Security payments
- Dividends or interest from investments
- Rental income, provided you’re not actively managing the properties
Unacceptable sources include:
- Any form of employment or freelance income
- Business income (even remotely)
- One-time or irregular payments (e.g., sale of property, gambling, crypto gains)
You’ll need to present bank statements, pension slips, tax documents, and in many cases, translations and apostilles.
Health Insurance, Accommodation, and Other Essentials
For your application to be accepted, you must provide:
- A private health insurance policy from a Spanish provider (no co-payments, no exclusions)
- A medical certificate confirming you don’t suffer from serious illnesses
- A police background check (from your country of origin)
- Proof of accommodation in Spain: deed, rental contract, or an invitation letter from a host
You will also need a valid passport, completed visa application forms, visa fees, and supporting documentation in line with the consulate’s requirements.
At Livin’Valencia, we help clients collect and prepare these documents with the guidance of vetted immigration lawyers and sworn translators.
Staying in Spain Without Becoming a Tax Resident?
Until recently, NLV holders were required to reside in Spain for at least 183 days per year, which made them tax residents by default. However, in 2024, a Spanish High Court ruled that this requirement was not valid as it wasn’t written into law.
This means that you may now legally maintain your NLV status without becoming a Spanish tax resident. However, this could change, so staying informed (and compliant) is essential.
For those intending to apply for permanent residency, note that a high degree of presence in Spain (at least 10 months per year) is still required over a five-year period.
The Application Process: Step-by-Step
- Prepare all documentation
- Apply at your local Spanish consulate (in your country of residence)
- Wait for approval (2–3 months typical processing time)
- Once approved, enter Spain within 90 days
- In Spain, register locally and apply for your residence permit and TIE (ID card)
Each step includes paperwork, timelines, and coordination—which is why we recommend working with professionals who understand the process.
Renewals and What Comes Next
- Year 1: First NLV (1 year)
- Year 2–3: Renewal for 2 years
- Year 4–5: Second renewal (2 more years)
After that, you’re eligible to apply for permanent residency. This grants more stability, access to the job market, and further integration into Spanish society.
Renewals require updated income documentation, a clean legal record, valid health insurance, and proof of continued residence.
What If You Want to Work Later?
After 12 months on the NLV, you may switch to a different residency status if you want to:
- Start a business
- Work for a Spanish employer
- Offer remote services under the Digital Nomad Visa
We can advise on this during your stay and help you prepare the transition in due time.
Bringing Your Family Along
Yes, you can include your spouse and dependents in your NLV application. Each dependent must meet the income threshold of €7,200/year.
For unmarried couples, separate applications are usually required, each meeting the full income requirement.
